The main function of the central supply or sterile department is to break the chain of infection and service / assist its main costumer, the operating room (OR ).
The central sterile department also supplies the labor and delivery department, the emergency department, the same day surgery department, the Cath lab department, the endoscopy department etc. The technicians within the central sterile processing department are also known as central sterile technician, sterile processing technician, surgical processing technician or sterilization technician.

The sterile processing technicians are in charge of the decontamination of medical devices and instruments utilize for surgery. They are responsible for the inspection , maintenance ,distribution and sterilization of instruments and tray sets .
